Careers in Property Management

Over 2002 the Institute of Residential Property Management (IRPM) was formed jointly by the Association of Residential Managing Agents, the Association of Retirement Housing Managers and the Property Managers Association Scotland Limited. It gives individuals operating in residential management the opportunity to gain accredited professional qualifications, to independently benchmark their career and to transfer from firm to firm, across the United Kingdom. This will improve the standard of service given to clients, increase the mobility of labour and make the residential management profession a highly desirable career.

The 7 aims of the Institute are

  1. Raise standards in this professional sector,
  2. Provide individuals with independent accreditation as to their professional skills,
  3. Provide a career development path for individuals,
  4. Aid in the process of recruiting new entrants to the sector,
  5. Assist practitioners in assessing job applicant capabilities
  6. Provide opportunities for Continuing Professional Development
  7. Generally improve the standing of the sector in the eyes of the public.

With 4 membership levels - from Affiliate to Associate to Member and then Fellow, the Institute caters for practitioners with a wide range of experience and provides opportunities for development and career progression. Obviously, the ultimate aim is to benefit the consumer or service user. In this increasingly competitive world, the advantage to a firm of having a high number of independently qualified staff cannot be over emphasised.
